LORD BASAVA, also known as Basaveshwara, was a divine prophet of the 12th century. He is considered the first Indian free thinker. His teachings and sayings are so inspiring and profound — compassionate like Buddha, simple like Mahaveera, loving like Jesus, and bold like Mohammed.
Palkurki Somanatha wrote the first Basava Purana in Telugu; Bheemakavi later wrote one in Kannada. According to these puranas, Basava was born to Saiva Brahmin parents, Madarasa and Madalamba. His father was head of the Agrahara of Bagewadi Village and Basava is considered the incarnation of Nandishwara.
Due to the Kalyana Kranthi of 1196 AD, the Vachana literature written by Basava and his associate Shiva Sharanas was suppressed for a time, but it eventually spread again for the welfare of mankind. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released a Basava commemorative coin on 23-06-2006. Basava Vachanas are now available in all languages.
Basava established a parliament in the Kalyana Kingdom of the Chalukya dynasty known as Anubhava Mantapa, where people from all walks of life assembled, discussed, debated and arrived at conclusions to make human life worthy and ideal. These teachings were propagated in simple prose-poems called Vachanas, equal in importance to the Bhagavadgita, Bible and Quran.
Basava aimed at a casteless and classless society based on liberty, equality and fraternity. Almighty grace made Basava the Prime Minister of the Chalukya dynasty. King Bijjala accepted his Anubhavamantapa activities in Kalyana Capital — now called Basava Kalyana in Bidar District, Karnataka.
